Why Ladies Only Self Defense/ Jiu-Jitsu is Needed

Did you know that one of the biggest and baddest animals, the elephant, is run by women? In a sport that is dominated by men, it's not only important to have a ladies only Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) class for fairness, but also for comfort. Most men may not realize, but some women don't want to roll with them. The thought of a sweaty man on top of you, while heavily breathing and with you in a weird position is not appealing at all. No wonder the drop off rate for women in BJJ is so high.

Instead, a comfortable environment is key to growing a strong female presence in jiu-jitsu. By having a ladies only jiu-jitsu class, Ladies are able to practice jiu-jitsu with other ladies which does two things:
1) allows ladies to sharpen their skills and practice moves without worrying about male physiology
2) creates a welcoming environment for other ladies

Don't let this sport be a "guys" sport. Be inclusive. Be fierce. BJJ for ladies.

About Coach Ana

Ana Teaching classes at Chicago School o
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Blue Belt:
If you've ever wanted to meet a real life Wonder Woman here is your chance. Sometimes big surprises come in small packages and that is exactly the case with Coach Ana. She has a tenacity fit for someone 10x her size, but she uses it to not only be a fierce competitor, but a caring coach and teammate.

For the ladies, Ana will focus on how to adjust grips and body positioning especially if you are small and how to overcome bigger men who look to only use their brute strength.

Frequently asked questions

DO I NEED EXPERIENCE?

No experience necessary. Just like learning a language, you'll do best when thrown into a situation right away. We will pair you with someone more experienced so you can learn from a higher belt and this gives our higher belt the opportunity to coach- a very Montessori approach to jiu-jitsu. You won't be required to spar, but you're welcome to it and we will again pair you with an advanced member to ensure no one gets injured.

HOW MANY LADIES ARE AT CLASS?

On average, you'll have about 5 ladies at class. Age ranges are between 21ish to 40ish so you'll have a good group of ladies.

WHAT'S THE VIBE?

Very chill. We are a no-ego gym. If you have uniforms of a different color or with patches from different gyms, we don't care. Just get in here to train.

WHEN ARE CLASSES?

Click here to see the latest schedule. Currently, classes are at 722 S Racine, Chicago, IL at Chicago School of Grappling

ARE CLASSES MAINLY SPORT OR SELF DEFENSE?

While we primarily focus on the sport aspect of jiu-jitsu, but what you learn in class is very applicable to real life situations. From talking to multiple women we have combined techniques to showcase both the art of competition and self defense. Here's a full article we've written to help you better understand our philosophy of street and sport jiu-jitsu.

HOW DO I GET STARTED?

Easy. Just click here to book a spot. Unfortunately, Chicago School of Grappling doesn't allow walk-ins in order to maintain safety. Classes are only $10.

Women's Self-Defense Seminar

One of my missions is to help women become self aware and to protect themselves from men. It's important for women of all ages to know how to defend, protect and escape bad situations. For my seminars, we usually keep them to two hours and go over 3-4 moves with lots of practice so that attendees can really internalize the teaching.
If you're interested, we can host at either the Chicago School of Grappling (722 S. Racine) or come to your space. If we come, we may need to bring mats to practice some jiujitsu on the ground. We will take care of photography and videography and share with you to display with your attendees.

My Love of Chicago School of Grappling

Prior to the Chicago School of Grappling, I was training MMA at another gym. I wanted something closer so I Googled new gyms and Chicago School of Grappling popped up at the top because one of the owners, John Le, not only has great hair, but also has great Search Engine Optimization (SEO) skills.
So, I came in and it was love at first site- that was  on January 3rd, 2018. They have several instructors and I primarily learned my Jiu-Jitsu from Cat Carrio, Nick Cimmarusti and John Le. Since then, I've been hooked and have competed around the Midwest. I hope to instill the same love of Jiu-Jitsu in you as they did in me.
